Center for Environmental Excellence by AASHTO held its second Best Practices in Context-Sensitive Solutions (CSS) competition in 2006. AASHTO received 62 applications from 31 states, and a diverse expert review panel selected five winners in four categories: best small urban project, best large urban project, best program, and best organizational integration. The panel also selected four additional initiatives they considered worthy of recognition as notable practices.

In 2005, Center for Environmental Excellence by AASHTO held a Best Practices in Context-Sensitive Solutions (CSS) competition. AASHTO received 75 applications from 33 states. After careful review by a diverse expert review panel, three winners and seven notable practices were selected from across the United States. These winning transportation projects, programs, and initiatives demonstrate exemplary efforts in CSS that will serve as models for achieving transportation solutions that fit the natural and human environment while achieving mobility and safety goals and enhancing community values. Center for Environmental Excellence by AASHTO, in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration, sponsored the 2004 Best Practices in Smart Growth and Transportation Competition to showcase outstanding examples of the work being done across the United States to successfully integrate smart growth principles with the planning and delivery of transportation projects, programs, and services. AASHTO received 34 applications from 21 states spanning the country. Our panel of expert judges selected three applicants as overall winners—one in each of three categories: best project, best program, and best in institutional change. These initiatives serve as models of the best innovations and collaborative efforts in integrating smart growth and transportation. Seven additional programs were recognized as notable practices. In 2003, the Center for Environmental Excellence by AASHTO conducted a Best Practices in Stewardship competition and received 75 entries from 32 states, plus the District of Columbia. In 2002, AASHTO joined with the Federal Highway Administration and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to conduct the Smart Moves: Transportation Strategies for Smart Growth Competition to identify the very best state and local smart growth efforts. State and local officials and representatives of nonprofit organizations reviewed applications from 32 projects around the nation.
