The Sustainability Peer Exchange was hosted by the Center for Environmental
Excellence by AASHTO on May 27-29, 2009 at Gallaudet University in Washington,
D.C.. The goal of the peer exchange was to facilitate both discipline-focused
and interdisciplinary discussion of sustainability issues facing the nation's
transportation system. Participants heard from experts, exchanged best
practices and identified areas for further research and understanding.
The theme of the peer exchange was "Transportation in Service of
a Sustainable Society", and the event supported AASHTO President
Allen Biehler's emphasis on sustainability during his tenure as
President.
The Exchange specifically focused on how transportation professionals
can model the way forward to achieving a sustainable
future, including discussions about partnerships across all modes and
levels of government, planning and designing more efficient multi-modal
systems, using "green" construction,
and effective maintenance practices.
