AARP and Project for Public Spaces Produce Series on Transportation, Community Building

The Project for Public Spaces, in partnership with the American Association of Retired People (AARP), has developed a three-part series of publications on streets and transportation planning as part of the PPS “Building Community Through Transportation” campaign and AARP’s “Livable Communities Initiative.” The first in the series, A Citizen’s Guide to Better Streets: How to Engage Your Transportation Agency, focuses on the role of local transportation agencies in street design and describes effective ways of interacting with transportation agencies. The second publication, Streets as Places: Using Streets to Rebuild Communities, is designed to help citizens shape and enhance their streets to serve all users with lively, walkable, community-friendly environments. The Quiet Revolution in Transportation Planning: How Great Corridors Make Great Communities, the third in the series, describes how planning transportation within the context of a larger corridor can benefit both mobility needs and community quality of life. PPS will present a series of webinars for AARP volunteers and the public in conjunction with the publications. For more information, link to the PPS webpage, Building Community Through Transportation. (1-8-09)
