Federal
  • FHWA Transportation Enhancement Activities
  • FHWA Environmental Programs - Two Offices within the Federal Highway Administration focus on environmental protection and enhancement. The Office of Natural and Human Environment primarily focuses on environmental programs associated with air quality, noise, and water quality, and on programs associated with the built environment, including transportation enhancements, bicycle and pedestrian facilities and scenic byways. The Office of Project Development and Environmental Review focuses on NEPA project development process as a balanced and streamlined approach to transportation decision-making that takes into account potential impacts on both human and natural resources and the public's need for safe and efficient transportation improvements. FHWA’s Office of Planning also has responsibility for environmental aspects of transportation planning.
  • FHWA Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs - The Bicycle and Pedestrian Program of the Federal Highway Administration's Office of Human and Natural Environment, promotes bicycle and pedestrian transportation accessibility, use, and safety.
  • FHWA Recreational Trails Program - is an assistance program of FHWA. Federal transportation funds benefit recreation by making funds available to the states to develop and maintain recreational trails and trail-related facilities for both non-motorized and motorized recreational trail uses.
  • National Highway Institute (NHI) is a part of the Office of Professional and Corporate Development (OPCD) within the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). NHI's goals are to: Train the current and future transportation workforce, transfer knowledge quickly and effectively to and among transportation professionals and provide training that addresses the full life cycle of the highway transportation system.
  • U.S. Forest Service - The mission of the USDA Forest Service is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.

Courses/Training
  • National Highway Institute.  The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) National Highway Institute (NHI) has been addressing the unique training needs of the transportation community, helping it to select, develop, implement, and evaluate solutions that best meet its goals. NHI provides "training solutions for transportation excellence" through a variety of courses and seminars that address the full spectrum of the highway transportation system.
  • Center for Transportation and the Environment, N.C. State University. CTE conducts research, education, and technology transfer that seek to mitigate the impacts of surface transportation on the environment. Products and services include a range of web seminars, training courses, and research.
  • Center for Neighborhood Technology - is a 28-year old organization based in Illinois that develops tools and methods for sustainable economic development. The Green Values Stormwater Toolbox provides information on sustainable stormwater management.
  • EPA Watershed Academy provides free Webcast Seminars/ Training sessions, which include environmental enhancement topics which may apply to transportation. You can receive information on these by subscribing to Water Headlines is a weekly on-line publication that announces publications, policies, and activities of the U.S. EPA’s Office of Water.   • Defenders of Wildlife Habitat and Highways Program supports efforts to make roads less dangerous to wildlife. The group works with state and local authorities to plan for the growth of communities to avoid or minimize the harm from future roads on wildlife and habitat. The group also offers training programs and workshops and provides links to training resources.
