Research Idea Scope

Given the tight budget times, DOTs are often not in a
position to make further investments in environmental areas, but some
environmental practices generate other efficiencies for DOTs.  These co-benefits and "low hanging
fruit" need to be identified, and a collaborative project with the Subcommittee
on Maintenance could do so.  A related
topic might be Quantifying of the environmental benefit from DOT pavement
choices and strategic communication; research has shown that pavement choices
exert the largest effects on both GHG emissions and waste.  PFC and OGFC also have water quality
benefits.

Urgency and Payoff

This project would help identify organizational
efficiencies that also produce environmental benefits, assisting state DOTs
with challenges they are facing today while boosting credibility and public
regard.
