Induced Growth
- Focus Area: Indirect Effects/Cumulative Impacts
- Status: Archived
- Subcommittee: Air Quality, Environmental Process
- Cost: $100k-$249k
- Timeframe: 1-2 years
Research Idea Scope
A study of past road projects that had added capacity and an analysis of induced growth caused by these projects. Determining which projects that added capacity actually induced growth and what factors were the main influencers on the scope of the growth, i.e. project type, need and purpose, location, population, county comprehensive plans, zoning, etc. The study would include a sampling (n=100 projects) projects that were built ten years ago from across the country that added capacity and compare the historical land use to today, using GIS software. Results will focus on why or why not induced growth occurred.
Urgency and Payoff
The results will allow researchers completing indirect effects analyses to determine which factors are most likely to induce growth, beyond simply adding capacity. This will aid in determining if induced growth for a particular project is reasonably foreseeable.
