Mitigation Methods for Joint Noise
- Focus Area: Noise
- Status: Archived
- Subcommittee: Community & Cultural Concerns, Environmental Process
- Cost: Unknown

Research Idea Scope
Objective would be to investigate various methods of mitigating noise from joints on overpasses. Look for practical methods that are both cost effective and easy to install/maintain. These methods can range from changes in joints materials, installation, designs to placing material under the bridge to mitigate the noise.
Key tasks would be to: develop possible methods; test methods; measure performance; measure cost; measure ease of installation and maintenance; measure other relevant factors; compare and present reasonable and practical solutions.
Urgency and Payoff
As our aging infrastructure is being rehabilitated, we have an opportunity to implement and incorporate measures that enhance the quality of life. Excessive joint noise is often a source of complaints from adjacent residents. Joint noise is not a component of the TNM analysis, but it can be a major contributor to the noise level near a bridge structure. The payoff is a cost effective measure that can be implemented as part of a rehab or new project.
