Federal Agencies

Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP)
ACHP is an independent federal agency that promotes historic preservation by providing a forum for influencing federal activities, programs, and policies that impact historic properties. ACHP advises the President and Congress on national historic preservation policy and is the only entity with the legal responsibility to encourage federal agencies to factor historic preservation into federal project requirements.

Army Corps of Engineers (Corps)
The Corps is responsible for regulatory and permitting program for any work, including construction and dredging, that occurs in the Nation’s waters, including wetlands.

Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ)
CEQ coordinates federal environmental efforts and works closely with agencies and other White House offices in the development of environmental policies and initiatives. The council’s chair serves as the principal environmental policy adviser to the President.

Department of Transportation (DOT)
The DOT is the primary agency in the federal government with the responsibility for shaping and administering policies and programs to protect and enhance the safety, adequacy, and efficiency of the transportation system and services.

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The EPA works to develop and enforce regulations that implement environmental laws enacted by Congress. The agency is responsible for researching and setting national standards for a variety of environmental programs, and delegates to states and tribes the responsibility for issuing permits and for monitoring and enforcement.

Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS)
The FWS, a bureau within the Federal Department of the Interior, is the coordinating agency that state transportation officials engaged in building of roads or other transportation projects must consult if there is a potential effect on endangered species.

Forest Service
The Forest Service is an agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture originally established in 1905 to provide quality water and timber for the nation’s benefit. Its role has expanded over the years to encompass environmental stewardship and recreation management duties.
