Research Idea Scope

Plug-in and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (EVs) reduce oil imports.  However, the current transportation infrastructure is not optimized for EVs.  Without new technology and infrastructure, capital and operational barriers will harm the “Plug-In” effort and hinder the United States from reducing its dependence on foreign oil.

Urgency and Payoff

The United States has a vast infrastructure for generating and distributing electrical power.  We connect EVs to this infrastructure by storing electricity with batteries.  This proposal addresses efficient transmission of power from the grid to EVs as they move. The research will investigate the transmission approach for electric vehicle grid connection in support of electric vehicles such as Plug-Ins and hybrids.
