What’s Possible? Adapting Emerging Online Communication Technologies for Transportation Applications
- Focus Area: Project Delivery/Streamlining
- Status: Archived
- Subcommittee: All
- Cost: Under $99k
- Timeframe: Under 1 year
Research Idea Scope
Perform a rapid and targeted global online communication technology assessment focused on emerging tools and “gadgets” that could be adapted, combined or customized to meet specific public involvement and participatory decision making needs of transportation management, planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance. Identify and share existing communication technology applications in the transportation industry and other industries. Develop concept level innovations that transfer emerging technical functionalities into real, practical, cost-effective project delivery and streamlining tools for transportation professionals. Deliver a research report providing “21st Century Public Involvement Technologies” and a mechanism for continuous developments.
Urgency and Payoff
Accelerate the development of new techniques and approaches that might otherwise take years to bring to the transportation industry. Develop a comprehensive research result and practical information delivery approach efficiently and effectively; reducing the costly traditional approach of developing new techniques and approaches on a proprietary project by project basis over time. Industry-wide sharing of a diverse range of new possibilities leading to continuing innovation and creative adaptations that improve project delivery and streamline public process management steps
