In April 2021, AASHTO’s Center for Environmental Excellence — in partnership with the Committee on Safety, the Council on Active Transportation, and the Federal Highway Administration — hosted a three-day peer exchange on active transportation safety. Each day of the event focused on a different topic:

  1. Safety data collection
  2. Asset management
  3. Project planning and delivery

In total, 90 attendees joined the peer exchange, representing 40 states and the District of Columbia. The event’s virtual format allowed attendees to both hear a national perspective from leaders in the field and discuss their own unique contexts with peers. Attendees shared what challenges they are currently facing, how they are addressing these challenges, and which strategies and solutions have been most effective for improving active transportation safety in their communities.
