    The following guidance lists types of projects that may fall into these cost and timeframe categories. Please note that this is a rough guideline, and some research ideas may not fall exactly into these categories.

    • Cost: Less than $100,000
    • Timeframe: Less than 1 year
    • Example Projects:
      • Improvements to analytical methods
      • Decision support tools
      • Procedures
      • Techniques employed by practitioners in support of transportation planning, programming, and development
    • Cost: $100,000 - $250,000
    • Timeframe: 1-2 years
    • Example Projects:
      • Projects involving original research
      • Development of handbooks
    • Cost: $250,000 - $750,000
    • Timeframe: 2-3 years
    • Example Projects:
      • Research involving field tests
      • Developing national manuals
