Decision Support Guide for Installation of Wildlife-Vehicle Collision Reduction Countermeasures
- Focus Area: Wildlife & Ecosystems
- Status: Archived
- Subcommittee: Natural Resources
- Cost: $250k-$499k
- Timeframe: 1-2 years
Research Idea Scope
A suggestion was made develop a Decision Support Guide for Installation of Wildlife-Vehicle Collision (WVC) Reduction Countermeasures as well as potentially adding wildlife-vehicle collision prevention measures to the FHWA Proven Safety Countermeasures (PSC) list. The analysis would include developing a Return on Investment or Benefit/Cost ratio included that rivals or exceeds ratios of other proven safety countermeasures. Here is an example of a similar guide for rumble strips: https://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/roadway_dept/pavement/rumble_strips/fhwasa16115/ch2.cfm#ch2i. Interest in this research topic was expressed by Oregon (Darlene Weaver), Colorado (Jane Hann), Pennsylvania (Drew Ames) and Maine DOT (Erik Harn).
Urgency and Payoff
Development of this guide would assist DOTs with more uniform implementation of WVC countermeasures.
