Research Idea Scope

To identify the optimal placement of electric vehicle
charging stations for the traveling public in order to reduce range anxiety for
electric vehicle travelers along major travel corridors in Illinois.

Focus area of the study would be Interstate 55 from
Chicago to St. Louis, Interstate 80 from Chicago to the Quad Cities (Rock
Island, Moline, Bettendorf and Davenport) and Interstate 57 from Chicago to
Cairo.

Urgency and Payoff

Strategic placement of electric vehicle charging stations
is necessary to ease range axiety among electric vehicle owners or travelers
and also among those that are considering purchasing electric vehicles. Long
range travel by electric vehicles is limited in Illinois due to the lack of
charging stations along major travel corridors.

Carbon emissions will be reduced with more electric
vehicles replacing combustion engine vehicles in Illinois. The use of electric
use of electric vehicles will also reduce the dependence on petroleum products
and utilize a renewable resource.
